Sharon L D
Finch – Choreographer & Coach
I started dancing
at the age of 9 years at my local dance studio. I obtained
all my dance medals at ‘Dancers’ in Preston, Lancashire; my teacher
then was Nick Attack. I stopped attending dance classes at
around 14 years. In years to come I began dancing socially
with my husband who had never danced a step in his life. Our
teachers entered us into a dance competition for social dancers and
beginners – we won! That was the beginning of competitive
dancing for us – we were hooked! We took private lessons and
entered more competitions, we got better and better. We
changed our dance teachers to the best competitive dance coaches in
the UK, Margaret Redmond and Chris Malone at Crown Dance studios in
Crosby, Liverpool. We were soon making and winning finals in
the pre-championship levels of ballroom and Latin American.
Chris Malone was our Latin coach and Margaret was our ballroom
coach. In 1993 we came 4th in the Champions of
Tomorrow competition at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool in the
Under 35 Beginners Section, there were 122 couples entered!
In 1995 we won the title at Pre-Championship level. We then
moved to championship level and won many major championships around
the country. We represented Scotland and England in
championship events and we were British finalists 4 times, until my
retirement from competitive dancing in 1998 - this is when I
moved to Huddersfield. During our time in competitive dance,
we had 4 hours private lessons per week; we attended 3 hour
competitive practice evenings 5 times per week and competed most
Sundays. We also worked full time! We attained a very
high level of dance and fitness, which we maintain to this
day. It was not an easy journey but it was a very enjoyable
and rewarding one – I would not have changed a thing!
I now
teach my own students, both children and adults and pride myself on
my professionalism and teaching abilities – not every dancer can
teach! I have an honours degree in Psychology and a Masters
Degree in Nutrition and Food Management. I am a Fellow of the
United Kingdom Professional Teachers of Dance and am a registered
Hip Hop and Street Dance coach.
I ensure
lots of fun in my studio, it is my philosophy that if you have fun,
you relax and if you relax you are able to learn more as well as
enjoy the experience.
My other
interests lie within health and fitness for people who are
overweight or just unhappy with their shape. I have created
an intervention program and therapy & nutrition clinic to
assist people make the necessary life, food and mind changes
towards long term weight loss, health, fitness and happiness.
I am also writing a book aimed at nutrition and weight loss for all
ages.
