Kenny J
Finch – Choreographer & Coach
Kenny started
dancing at the age of 7 years, only a few months after having open
heart surgery. It was apparent very quickly that he was a
naturally gifted dancer. By the time he had reached 8 years
old he was dancing in his first major championship – the North West
Championships at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool – He came
4th!
His
ability and natural flow in ballroom was amazing for one so young
and his teachers and I knew he had something special. Kenny
moved teachers to Margaret Redmond and Chris Malone and he went
from strength to strength. By the time he was 11 years old,
he was IDTA ranked 6th in the WORLD!
Kenny is
talented in styles from Freestyle disco, Rock n Roll, Salsa, Show
Dance, Hip Hop and Street dance but it was in the Ballroom and
Latin American styles in which he shone. Kenny has amazing
musicality and feels the music as he dances. Being a regular
finalist and winner in all major championships both in the UK and
abroad, Kenny was invited to dance in the Youth (under 21 years)
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in Slovenia representing Scotland – he was 16
years old. Kenny became Scotland’s only representative at the
WORLD’S for some years. After 3 days of solid competition,
over 300 entrant couples were narrowed down to just 12 (semi
final)!! “I can still remember to this day and always
will, the heat and fatigue - the pressure was massive”, “ we
danced excellently that night, but it was not to be”, Although
Kenny made the last 12 he was not in the final – he had missed the
final by only 4 marks!
Kenny at
the age of 16 was IDTA WORLD under 21 years ranked
12th. This is the last World ranking Kenny
received as his partner left dancing to get married and have a
baby. Kenny still dances every day and has another partner
whom he still competes with. Kenny lives for dance and
although the strongest lady dancers are from Italy, Russia and
Slovenia, his current partner is from Chester.
Kenny has
a natural teaching ability and is passionate about his student’s
progress. He is very good natured, patient and is very
well mannered. Kenny is also a gifted DJ and has performed
many times in Huddersfield, Manchester etc.
Kenny
teaches our children in their competitive dance. When he
first began teaching at the studio, he vowed he would never teach
children – now he teaches most of the children’s
classes!
Choreography is one of
Kenny’s major strengths and he can produce a great dance routine
for anyone within minutes. He believes in teaching full
routines to individual couples rather than odd steps for the whole
class. This ensures that all couples are dancing to the best
of their abilities and potential. Kenny teaches most of the
private lessons in the studio and really cares about the couples
dance achievements. Both Kenny and Sharon teach
competitive couples and are always on the lookout for new couples
to compete.
Together
we are a great team!
